LUCKY MINER
' SMALL FORTUNE WON TN ART UNION. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. WHANGAREI. May 9. Mr R. Stewart. Ewing's Road, Whangarei, a miner who has not been employed in a mine for the last five years finds it very hard to realise that he is a comparatively rich, man this morning. With the non de plume “Optimist,” he has won £2OOO in the “You Never Know” art union. Mrs Stewart, who heard the news over the radio, was shaking with excitement when her husband arrived home from work. Since he was thrown out of employment at Hikurangi five years ago, Mr Stewart has known hard times. He was employed in various types of casual work till about 18 months ago, when he obtained a labouring job in the Whangarei Lime Company. Mr Stewart said this morning that he has obtained a tunnelling job in the Hawke's Bay district, which will begin at the end of this month. He has been saving from his limited earnings to make the shift. “Now I’ll be able to move to Hawke’s Bay without much difficulty,” he commented.
