The Hon P. C. Webb. Minister of Labour, will return to Wellington from the South Island today. The Hon H. G. R. Mason, AttorneyGeneral, returned to Wellington yesterday from Rotorua. Mr J. D. Baybutt, of the “TimesAge,” left today for Nelson on a visit concerning the re-organisation of a newspaper in that district. Mr and Mrs C. Corbett, of Lower Hutt, and formerly of Masterton, are on a visit to friends in the district, and will leave tomorrow on a motor tour) of the North Island. The Hon J. Dash, Minister of Transport, Queensland, arrived at Wellington yesterday by the Wanganella on a health trip. He was accompanied by Mrs Dash. The death occurred in New Plymouth recently of Mr Martin Dudley Stagpoole, a former member of the Armed Constabulary and the New Zealand Police Force, at' the age of 85 years.
The death occurred on May 6, at. Hamilton, of Mrs Olive Wordsworth Fowlei*, relict of the late Mr Robert Clive Fowler, and third daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John Tully, of Greytown.
Mr J. C. T. Fleming, till recently an assistant master at Wanganui Collegiate School, left Auckland by the Awatea on Monday evening for Sydney, en route to the Solomon Islands, where he will join the staff of the Melanesian Mission. The death has occurred in London, after a long illness, of Mr William Higgins, managing director of the Empire Printing and Box Manufacturing Company, Wellington, aged 55. Mr Higgins was a prominent figure in business and sporting circles.
At yesterday’s meeting of the Masterton County Council the chairman, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee, 'and the clerk, Mr J. C. D. Mackley, were appointed as delegates to the annual conference of the New Zealand Counties’ Association to be held in Wellington July 26. An association extending, over the past 27 yeprs with the Masterton Harrier Club will be the fine achievement of Mr G. R. Sykes, who will be present at the club’s 27th anniversary celebrations at the Park Oval on Saturday next. Mr Sykes was one of the first vice-presidents of the club. There was a large and representative cortege at the funeral of the late Miss Alice Jones, of Masterton, which took place yesterday afternoon. An impressive service was conducted in the Methodist Church by the Rev F. J. Parker, who also officiated at the graveside. The large number of beautiful wreaths received testified to the high esteem in which the late Miss Jones was held. The pallbearers were Messrs E. Jones, N. R. Jones, R. Wakelin, J. Gray, S. H. Ralph and Davies. During the service at the church the Methodist choir rendered the beautiful anthem “Crossing the Bar.” Wreaths were received from the following- among others: —Methodist Church Choir, Trustees, Church Women, Children’s Choir, Sunday School, and the executive and members of the Masterton Orchestral Society. Mr Samuel Vickery Burridge, Hinau Street, Lower Hutt, who died suddenly in Taihape on Monday, "was born in Kaiapoi 78 years ago. In 1888, he joined the service of the Gear Meat Preserving Company in Petone, where he was ultimately promoted to the position of manager of the fellmongery department. In 1919 Mr Burridge resigned from thefcompany and started sheep-farming in Taihape. In 1931 he rejoined the company, and took over his old position as departmental manager and was so employed up to the time of his death. He took an active part in local politics, being for a time a member of the Petone Borough Council'and a member of the Hutt Licensing Committee. He was a member of the executive and one of the founders of the Hutt Valley Trotting Club (now the Wellington Trotting Club), and was himself the owner of horses. He was also a member and for a period president of the Petone Rifle Club. He is survived by his widow, an adopted son, and daughter, and a brother, Mr W. Burridge, Carterton.
