ACCIDENTS TO CYCLISTS
PROPOSED ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN. COUNTY COUNCIL SUPPORT. The co-operation of the council in an enforcement campaign with a view to having every bicycle adequately equipped and to ensure that the cyclists complied with the' regulations, was sought by the Commissioner of Transport in a letter received at yesterday’s meeting of the Masterton County Council. The Commissioner stated that statistics indicated that the number of accidents to persons riding bicycles was still too high and. with the approach of the winter months, when bicycles would be used during the hours of darkness, accidents might be expected to mount steadily. In the interests of the cyclists themselves it was essential that each machine be fully equipped and ridden according to the regulations. The chairman, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee, suggested that cycle dealers and repair men should see that the bicycles were properly equipped before they left the shops. Councillor W. I. Armstrong said that cyclists riding three abreast almost in the middle of the streets constituted an absolute menace.
The council decided to support the campaign to the fullest extent.
