LADIES’ GOLF MATCH. CARTERTON v GREYTOWN. (•'Times-Age’’ Special.) The following will .represent the Carterton ladies in a match against Greytown at Greytown on Thursday next:—Mrs B. Booth, Miss Berrill, Mrs C. C. Callender, Miss Campbell, Mrs A T. Murray, Miss Lamb, Miss Armstrong, Mrs Riggs, Mrs Harrington, Mrs Robinson, Mrs Colson, Mrs M. Campbell. Emergencies: Mrs C. K. Goodin, Mrs V. Gustofson. OBITUARY. MR C. JENSEN. The death of a very old identity of Carterton and the South Wairarapa in the person of Mr Carl Jensen occurred at the Greytown Hospital on Sunday. The late Mr Jensen, who was 93 years of age, had been resident in Greytown for some considerable time. He had not enjoyed good health in recent years and was admitted to the hospital on Saturday. He was born in Denmark and came to New Zealand in 1871, thus having been a resident of the Dominion for 68 years. He married in 1878 Miss Nellie Nielsen, who predeceased him three years ago. There are seven of a family left to mourn their loss. They are Alfred (Featherston), Albert and Frank (Carterton), Mesdames Stanley Benton (Featherston), Morris (Greytown), Munns (Wellington),’ Parks (Pahiatua), One son. died several years ago. There are also 47 grand-children and 13 great grandchildren. The funeral will take place at the Featherston Cemetery today. NINETY-THIRD BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. MR A. R. WALLIS. . A happy gathering took place at Manaia (Taranaki) on Saturday, April 29, when Mr Arnold R. Wallis (wellknown and respected in Carterton where he lived for very many years) celebrated his 93rd birthday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs W. Prestidge. A gaily decorated iced cake, ornamented with 93 miniature candles, decked the festive table, and a happy time was spent. Daughters, sons, grand children and a great granddaughter were present at the birthday party. Mr Wallis received many congratulatory messages and presents. Carterton residents . will remember Mr Wallis, as he was in business here for over 50 years as builder and undertaker. His wife predeceased him a number of years ago. Born at “Hulmers,” Nelson, Mr Wallis left there when 28 years of age and resided at V Featherston 65 years ago. At that time he walked to Taratahi and Carterton to work. Later he moved to Clareville, where he built the first Taratahi cheese factory, the old portion of which stands today, and is 58 years old. After residing at Clareville for some years he' removed to Park Road in a house that is at present owned and occupied by Mr W. Dunce. He afterwards came to Carterton to live at the northern end of the town and when in business here • as a builder several buildings were entrusted to him for erection, among them being the Carter Old Men’s Home in Moreton Road, and Moriarty’s buildings, now occupied by the Carterton Furnishing Company. Handing over his business to his sons he went to Tauranga for a while, but in recent years had resided in Taranaki. He is enjoying fairly good health despite his old age and is able to read arid write without the aid of glasses. Members of his family of 16 still living are:—William (Wellington), James F. (Greytown), Philip (Greytown), Thornton, Dean and Noel (Palmerston North), George and John (Hawera), Mrs H. S. Mundy (Hawera), Mrs Prestidge (Manaia), Mrs Thomas (Manaia). One son, Edward, was killed in the Great War, being a member of the Otago Infantry. Mr A. R. Wallis took part in the Maori war at Parihaka. In his later years in Carterton Mr Wallis was associated with various institutions, school committee (Clareville), Brick and Tile Company and other institutions. Many years ago he bought a tract of land in Carterton now known as Kent Street, sub-divided and sold it for building purposes. This particular land was purchased from Mr Challis, father of Mrs Arthur Phillpotts, of Carterton. Altogether Mr A. R. Wallis rendered excellent service as a citizen in Carterton during his long residence and today is living in retirement with his daughter. Personal. Mr and Mrs G. S. Bruce and family. who have been spending a holiday at Raumati Beach, have returned to Carterton. TOTARA LODGE OF DRUIDS. ANNUAL BALL ARRANGEMENTS. The fortnightly meeting of the Totara Lodge of Druids was held last night, Sister R. Brazendale presiding over a good attendance, including several members of Stonehenge Lodge, _ Masterton. // Prior to business a vote of condol- / cnce was passed to Bros A. J. and E. Dew in the death of their mother. One candidate was proposed for membership and will be installed on the next lodge night. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £2B 12s 5d were presented and passed for payment. Members are reminded that next' lodge night will be quarter night when the election of officers will take place. Satisfactory reports were received from all the sub-committee showing that complete arrangements had been made for the annual ball. The committee of the lodge set up to canvas members for subscriptions met with a ready response. As the proceeds will go toward the benevolent fund of the lodge it is a worthy one to support. Supper was dispensed after business was completed.
