RUGBY FOOTBALL. OPENING MATCH OF SEASON. (“Times-Age” Special.) The opening matches of the 1939 Rugby football season were played on Saturday. At Waione, Pukehinatt defeated Tiraumea by 29 points to 3, after a somewhat ragged game. Tiraumea. were only able to field fourteen men, one ol whom <C. Bellshaw) was disabled early in the first spell. For the winners. Hardwick, Hartgill, Newland and Clark were always prominent, while for Tiraumea the solid workers were Bob Smith, Thomas, Richardson, and Churchouse. Mr D. McDonald controlled the game. At .Pongaroa, the home team had a surprise victory over Coast, Avinning by 10 points to nil. Mr W. Thomas was referee. Personals. Mr and Mrs W. E Davies and Mrs G. T. Smith are visiting Tologa Bay. They are expected to return tomorrow. Mr and Mrs P. H. Donovan have returned from a week’s fishing at Tokannu. Messrs Moynihan, Gupwell and G. T. Smith have returned from a fishing excursion to Lake Taupo. Fishing at the mouth of the Tongariro River, Mr Smith caught a fine ten pound trout, this being the third largest fish taken from the Lake this season. Golf at Waimiro. The members of the Waimiro Golf Club held their opening day during the weekend, weather conditions being ideal. The president (Mr W. Clements), in declaring the course open, welcomed a large number of visitors from Pongaroa. A two-ball foursome was played, the winners being Messrs T. Pickett (Pongaroa) and G. Frame (Waimiro) with a net 61. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies, at the conclusion of which the Pongaroa president (Mr A. W. Theed) thanked the club for its hospitality.
