CARTERTON
MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. ANNUAL- MEETING. (•'Times-Age” Special.) The annual general meeting of the Wairarapa Miniature Rifle Association was held ■in Carterton on Saturday night. The president (Mr W. Johnson) presided, and there were also present, Messrs H. King, and B. R. Jenkins (Masterton) W. Press and R. F. Taucher (Carterton), K. McKenzie (Featherston), L. G. Rasmussen and C. * Bain (South Featherston), W. Bain and D. J. Flynn (Martinborough). Greytown were not represented. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted, the latter showing a credit balance of £l6 10s 7d over the year’s working. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet the president paid a tribute to the work of the secretary (Mr C. J. De Lacey) and congratulated the Association upon its sound financial position. Mr H. King seconded the motion. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr G. W. Johnson and C. J. De Lacey. The secretary of the Wellington M.R A. wrote stating that Wellington had fixed May 27 as the date for 20-a-side match against Wairarapa at Welling- . ton. It was resolved that the secretary write, stating that May 27 was not a suitable date for Wairarapa, and suggesting June 17. It was resolved that the annual championship meeting be held in the Crown Theatre, Greytown on Saturday, July 22. Considerable discussion took place on the use of targets for inter-club matches, and the championship meeting, and it was decided that metric targets be used for the championship meeting, and match targets for all other matches. It was resolved that the same prize money as last year be allocated for the championship meeting. It was decided the association, bear ' the cost of engraving of all trophies, shields, cups, jnedals, etc., won by competitors, and that the secretary insure shields and cups owned by the association. The secretary was granted a bonus in recognition of his services during the past season, for which he returned thanks. The delegates expressed confidence in the work carried out in connection with the pairs’ competition on the programme, and re-appointed Mrs G. King and Mr Rasmussen to again control the event. They were heartily thanked for last year’s services in this respect. The chairman (Mr W. Johnson) expressed his intention of presenting cups to the lady and man scoring the most points in the Pairs Competition. The donation was received with acclamation. Votes of thanks were accorded the retiring executive and officers, the Press, and all. who had ■ assisted the Association in any way, and to the chairman for presiding. The following first round fixtures for matches to be fired for inter-club shields “A’ and “B” and Association cup were arranged:— Week ending May 20 —Martinborough v Greytown, at Greytown; Masterton v Carterton, at Masterton: South Featherston v Featherston, at South Featherston. Week ending May 27—Masterton v Martinborough, at Martinborough; Carterton v South Featherston at Carterton; Featherston v Grey town, at Featherston. Week ending, June 3.—Featherston v Carterton, at Featherston; South v Martinborough, at South Featherston; Greytown v Masterton, at Greytown. Week ending June 10 —Masterton v Featherston, at Featherston; Grey town v South Featherston, at Grey town; Martinborough v Carterton, at Martinborough. Week ending June 17:—Featherston v Martinborough, at Featherston; Carterton v Greytown, at Carterton; South Featherston v Masterton. at South Featherston. SECOND ROUND. The fixtures for this round will be the same as in the first round, except F that the home team will travel. The week ending dates are June 24. July 1. July 8 July 15. Wairarapa Championship meeting, July 22, at Grey town; last inter-club fixture. July 29. Members of clubs not firing in teams can fire for Association Cup which event is apart from Inter-Club Shield matches. CARTERTON GOLF CLUB. MEN’S DIVISION. The completion of the two days’ play for the captain’s medal rounds was completed on the Taratahi links on Saturday last. The competition was won by Mr T. T. Hughes, whose scores for the two days were: —81-17-74-14 —134. J. V. Gustafson was runner-up with 93-24-91-24—136. Other best cards were L. H. Aplin 92-22-90-22—138; C. Clark, 84-16-87-16—139; F. Hill 89-21-94-21—141.
Messrs Hill and Hughes have donated two silver challenge buttons. These are held by Messrs Hughes and Gustafson. They played a challenge game with Messrs Clark and Fisher and were successful in retaining them. They are challenged for each week. The best cards handed in by lady members of the. Carterton Club on Saturday for the one-club competition were: —Miss M. Smart, 103, 28, 75; Mrs Forbes. 114, 36, 78; Mrs Robinson, 115, 36, 79. Personal. Rev Father J. Higgins, S.M.. Wellington, was the guest of the Catholic Presbytery over the weekend. He spoke at the morning and evening services at Carterton yesterday on Catholic action. A mission will be opening in the parish in a fortnight’s time. Mrs C. F. Page (Carterton) Mr and Mrs Geo McKenzie and Mrs H. McNae (Greytown), left on Friday to attend the Blenheim trots. Convicted for Drunkenness. A first offender for drunkenness was before Mr W. C. M. Sorenson. J.P. at the S.M. Court this morning, and was convicted and discharged. CARTERTON FIRE BRIGADE. ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT. There was a large gathering of visiting firemen and local citizens at the annual smoke concert of the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade held in the Brigade Hall on Saturday night. Superintendent R. P. Wakelin presided. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs B. Roberts, M.P., D. L. Taverner (mayor), B. Schere (president, U.D.F.8.A.) Girling Butcher (Marton Brigade), R. Smith (life member), Austin Reid. J. A? B. Lawrence, Councillor Stevens, and the Taihape Fire Brigade. The first toast was that of “The King.” proposed by the chairman, who afterwards extended a cordial welcome to everyone, and said what a pleasure it was to have the president of the U.F.B.A. witn them which was the first time Carterton had been honoured in this respect. sided at the piano, and Miss Berrill played the accompaniment for Miss Millichamp. The championship medals won at the Wanganui Fire Brigade Demonstration were presented by Captain Watts, to the champion team (Fireman Matson, captain. Deputy J. Churchhouse. Firemen G. Steffert and A. Clarke). In making the presentation, Captain Watts said that the achievement by the Carterton team was a wonderful one, and great praise was due to them for their excellent team work. He presented the medals amid applause. Superintendent Casey in well-chosen words then presented the following trophies:—Team’s Shield (won by Deputy Churchouse’s team); Taucher Cup, to Firemen A. R. Steffert and A. Clarke; Two-men Cup (Deputy Churchouse and ex-Fireman J. Manley). Service Honours were awarded to Dr R. N. Campbell (Hon Surgeon), 7 years; Motorman J. Catt, 17 years, Fireman G.
