NAZI FLAGS

NOT POPULAR IN ITALY TORN UP BY CHILDREN VON RIBBENTROP’S VISIT. (Independent Cable Service.) LONDON, May 6. The German Foreign Minister, Herr von Ribbentrop, arrived at Milan today, and was greeted by the Italian Foreign Minister, Count Ciano. Children were handed Italian and Nazi paper flags to wave when Herr von Ribbentrop and Count Ciano drove through the streets of Milan, but when the procession had passed only the Italian flags were intact, the Nazi emblems having been torn up and strewn on the ground. The conversations between the two Ministers began immediately. It is reported that they are to discuss the partition of Slovakia between Germany and Hungary. The Rome correspondent of “The Times” says that well-informed quarters there believe Germany will refrain from going to the last extreme with Poland. It is authoritatively asserted that if Germany fails to get what she wants by negotiation she will approach Russia. The first steps in this direction have already been taken, with a view to squeezing Poland with Russian help. It still remains to obtain Italy’s consent to this end, for which purpose the Italian and German Foreign Ministers are meeting. “Far from conciliatory” is the Italian description of Colonel Beck’s speech. Official circles are disappionted that Colonel Beck turned down the German frontier guarantee, and declare that they are confident that Herr Hitler would honour it.
