Mr and Mrs H. Reid and Mrs A. Butcher have returned to Masterton after a motor tour of North Auckland. A newcomer to Masterton, Mr L. Hudson, an ex-member of the Saint Andrew's College (Christchurch) Pipe Band, was among those present at the Saint Andrew Society’s gathering on Saturday evening. Among the visitors to Masterton for the Saint Andrew Society gathering on Saturday evening were Miss Brown, of Palmerston North, who was the guest of Mr and Mrs J. Y. Douglas, and Mr and Mrs Wilkinson, also of Palmerston North, who were the guests of Mr and Mrs G. G. Hancox. Mr and Mrs Wilkinson are Mrs Hancox’s parents.

■ The death occurred in Auckland on Saturday of Mr Max Steinberg, after a short illness. Mr Steinberg came to New Zealand from the United States of America more than 15 years ago, and developed an extensive business in the 'manufacture of paints. For a number of years Mr Steinberg owned racehorses, several of which were successful performers, including Elenage, which raced in Australia, and Konneta, which was seen at the Auckland meeting and meetings in other parts of the North Island. Mr Steinberg, who died at the age of 62, leaves a widow. Mr Edwin Percy Yaldwyn, who retired from the position of manager lor New Zealand of the Commercial Bank of Australia, Ltd., a little more than 18 months ago, after half a century of banking experience, died in Wellington on Saturday at the age of 66 years. Mr Yaldwyn was born in 1872, and joined the Commercial Bank in 1888. He occupied various positions at the head office and metropolitan branches of the bank till 1902, when he was appointed manager in Fremantle, Western Australia. He was appointed an inspector with residence in Melbourne in 1911. and in 1912 was chosen by the bank to open its business in Wellington. From then till he retired in October, 1937. lie was in charge of the bank’s affairs in New Zealand, opening up branches throughout the Dominion. Mr Yaldwyn was elected chairman of the Associated Banks of New Zealand in 1934. and was re-elect-ed to that position in 1935.
