AIASTERTON CLUB NOVICE CHAMPIONSHIP. WON EASILY BY C. J. CARLE. A large muster of harriers were present on Saturday afternoon at the Park Oval when the Masterton Harrier Club held its annual 3-mile Novice Championship. Messrs J. J. Hunter and R. Bell laid a trail following the championship course. The novices’ race was set at a gruelling pace by C. J. Carle and A. Andrews who soon lost the rest of the field. Andrews and Carle were fighting it out until Emmerson’s paddock was reached when Andrews developed the stitch and dropped back, Carle forging ahead to take the lead. Carle went on to win by 440yds from Andrews, who was a similar distance ahead of Forrest, with Orr fourth. The time, 19 min 25sec was fully a reduction of two minutes on last year’s time. The junior members’ race proved most interesting to watch. A newcomer to the sport, P. Greenlees, showing pace and style to win comfortably from P. Reynolds and D. Cairns in 23 minutes. More should be heard of this promising young harrier in the future. Cther members of the club who were ineligible' to compete in the novice race held a training run. Full particulars of the club’s 27th anniversary programme for May 13, will appear in the “Times-Age” on Wednesday.
