MASTERTON CLUB GAMES KEEN PLAY DURING WEEKEND. (Notes by "Handicapper"). There was a large muster of players on the Masterton Golf Club's finks during the weekend, when the course was in perfect order. The winner of the bogey competition. L. Connolly, 3 up, staged a very good round. Only two years ago. he was a junior, and is now down to the 10-8 mark. C. Camp-bell-Heard, who was second in this competition (he was not playing last year on account of illness) struck form, doing 72 off the stick for 2 up. Campbell-Heard will now be playing on the one mark. Several • of the younger players, T. W., Horton, jun., J. Coom, A. R. Todd and G. Falloon, all scored exceptionally well. Horton did rounds of 70 and 71, and is now on the 8/6 mark. J. Coom did a brilliant round in par figures, 73. His handicap has been reduced. It is noteworthy that most of the younger players who have been giving such good accounts of themselves, have received tuition from the new professional, Keith Williams. Some exciting finishes were seen in the president's challenge trophy contest. Eric Henderson and B. Kiernan, both on the low mark, had a keen match, which was won by Henderson on the 19th green. Kiernan, who showup very prominently at the New Zealand open tournament last year, is taking a keen interest in the game this year, and is playing a lot on the Masterton links. He will be heard of in the near future. R. McKenzie, after a two years’ lapse of form, has come back to his game, and during the weekend he staged a net 70. C. Torr is also back in form, doing a net 73. The writer had the pleasure during the weekend of playing with some of the younger members, notably J. D. Palairet, on the 4 mark, and J. M. McPherson, on the 10 mark. When these players get used to the course they will be heard of. Both hit nice tee shots, but they have not just got accustomed to the touch of the greens. They promise to be a great asset to the club. The bogey competition resulted as follows: — A grade: L. Connolly. 3 up; C. Camp-bell-Heard. 2 up; T. W. Horton, A. Drew. 1 up; A. R. Todd, G. Falloon, J. Coom, T. H, Horton, all square, C. C. Marsack. B. Kiernan, 1 down; R. Page and E. Henderson. 2 down. B grade: L. Daniell, 2 up; J. G. Bee. 3 down.
