SAINT ANDREW SOCIETY

MONTHLY GATHERING HELD ON SATURDAY. CONCERT AND DANCING. The monthly gathering of the Saint Andrew Society, held in the Masonic Hall on Saturday evening, was, in the opinion of many of those present, the most successful and enjoyable to date. The concert items were of the usual high quality, and the dancing ■that followed was kept up with- vigour .and enthusiasm till the near approach of midnight required the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem. The concert opened with a pipe solo ;by Piper L. Pither. Other- items included vocal duets by Misses Heather .and Joan Douglas, and by Mrs Burke .and Miss O’Donnell, and vocal solos by Miss Rose Robinson. Chieftain P. C. McLaren gave a highly interesting talk on Rob Roy MacGregor, in which he traced the history of that famous Scot, and told many tales of his romantic career. Mr McLaren disclosed rare story-telling ability and a fine dramatic sense. His delivery was excellent, and his accent appropriately reminiscent of his native hills. The dancing programme commenced with a grand march (led by Chief’s Piper Pickett and Piper Pither) followed by the Circassian circle. Then came .eights.ome and foursome reels, dashing white sergeant, petronella and waltz country - dance, with an occasional waltz by way of rest from the greater vigour of the Scots dancing. The dance floor was at all times filled' to capacity with a happy and enthusiastic throng of dancers, whose gleeful “heuchs” must have astonished any passer-by who was unaware that the Saint Andrew Society was holding revel. Chief’s Piper Pickett had a strenuous evening in providing the music for the Scots dances. Reference was made to the success of a member, Mr Bill Jaspers, in flying tests at the Hood Aerodrome. The Society’s usual Monday evening dance practice will be held this evening.
