DEFENCE OF TARANAKI
NATIONAL GUARD FORMED. BY RETURNED SOLDIERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 2. An army unit of returned soldiers, is to be formed in New Plymouth. Members will immediately begin training to fit themselves physically and tactically for the defence of Taranaki. This Guard” will have no official status with the Government, but the Returned Soldiers’ Association is confident that it can do excellent work for defence. The scheme is the outcome of an opinion expressed by the Returned Soldiers’ Association branch that gestures are valueless- unless they are followed by something tangible. Officials point out that in recent months various organisations have offered their services, but then have sat back and done nothing more. Army rank in the Great War will not count in the new organisation, all members being on an even footing. Officers will be elected when the company is formed. It is considered that the scheme will have an immediate appeal and spread throughout the Dominion.. Apart from its defence value, organisers feel that the scheme will play an important part in promoting national fitness and will help volunteer territorials.
