RUGBY FOOTBALL
MAORI BOARD RESIGNS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. After a conference between the New Zealand Rugby Football Council and the Maori Advisory Board of the New Zealand Rugby Union on Monday night, the board yesterday intimated to the council that it was not prepared to carry on. The conference was called by the council after the administration of Maori football had been criticised at a previous meeting. A member of the board said yesterday that the conference had been most unsatisfactory. Though the. board was criticised, among other things, for over-spending, it had acted only on the instructions of the New Zealand union. The motion to resign was moved by Mr Harding Leaf, North Auckland, who was one of the managers of the Maori team on the Fijian tour last year, and seconded by Mr A. Takarangi, Wanganui. It was as follows: — That in view of the feeling that the services of the Maori Advisory Rugby Board in acting as intermediary between the Maori people and the New Zealand Rugby Union are no longer necessary, the board cease to function. The member's of the board are: —Mr E. Parata, Otago, chairman; Messrs Harding Leaf, and W. Rika, North Auckland; Mr T. French, Poverty Bay; Messrs Takarangi and Kingi Tahiwi. Western Maori. THE FIJIAN TEAM. MATCH IN WAIRARAPA IN SEPTEMBER. WELLINGTON, This Day. The Fiji Rugby Union advised the New Zealand Rugby Union yesterday that its team would arrive in New Zealand on August 17 next, and play 11 matches on the tour, leaving for Fiji on October 4. It was decided to suggest the following itinerary for the tour: — August 26—North Island. August 30—King Country. September 2—Auckland. September 6 —Nelson-Golden Bay. September 9 —Buller. September 13—North Otago. September 16 —Ashburton. September 20—Wairarapa. September 23—Poverty Bay - East Coast. September 27—Bay of Plenty. September 30—Maoris, in Hamilton. SEASON IN WAIRARAPA. CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES ON SATURDAY. The Wairarapa Rugby Union’s championshrip games will commence on Saturday. The senior game at Masterton will be between Masterton and Gladstone. Both combinations include many fast players and spectators should witness a good open game with plenty of thrills. The match will commence at 2.30 p.m. At Greytown those old opponents, Red Star and Greytown, will meet and as both teams will field a numi ber of new players interest will be I keen to see how they shape. At Carterton the local fifteen and Old Boys will meet and here again a good game should be witnessed.
