HOCKEY UMPIRES

ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. ALTERATIONS TO RULES. The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Hockey Umpires' Association was held in Masterton last evening. Mr W. Harding presided. The annual report and balance sheet was adopted as read. Mr S. Burnip wrote tendering his resignation from the association. Mr Burnip’s resignation was accepted with regret, and he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his services during the past. A request from Mr G. Maloney that he be examined for his N.Z. Badge (practical) at Christchurch on May 13 was received. A letter to this effect is to be forwarded to the N.Z. Hockey Umpires’ Association to make the necessary arrangements. A further letter to the N.Z. Hockey Umpires’ Association is to be forwarded asking for further information regarding the amended rules. A new rule that players shall not use any part of the body except the hands to stop the ball, will come into force this season. This means that the ball must be stopped with the hand or the stick. A further alteration to the rules is that players shall not interfere in any way with an opponent’s stick while playing the ball. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr W. Harding; vice-presidents, Messrs C. N. Cole and D. A. Pickering; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. Stubbings; hon. auditor, Mr Ri Foster; appointments, Mr W. Harding; examiners, Messrs J. Fisher, A. Stubbings and G. Hayne; delegate to the Wairarapa Women’s Association, Mr A. Southey; delegate to the Wairarapa Hockey Association, Mr A. Stubbings; sub-committee, Messrs Stubbings, Harding and Hayne. Subscriptions were fixed the same as last year. - Owing to the increased number of teams competing in the fixtures, it was decided to ask the senior players to assist the association by refereeing unior games when possible. Several players have already offered to assist in this direction. Several new members were elected.
