A NEW “AUSTIN”

MESSAGE FROM LORD AUSTIN. In designing the Austin Eight (Lord Austin of Longbridge, K.B.E. states) we have endeavoured to create a small car that will carry with it no sense of compromise or limitation. Our ideal has been a car that would perform exceptionally in every way. give adequate seating plus the luxury external aspect justify by its cleancut and well-balanced lines, full pride of ownership. ; I am confident we have so far achieved that ideal that, everyone who invests in an Austin Eight will have reason to be proud of his —or her — choice.

But quite apart from these qualities of personal appeal, I want it to be realised that this new Austin, while not the last word —for that is never uttered —is the best word yet in motoring.

The Eight comes as a logical development from a small car that has enjoyed unexampled success. I refer to the Austin Seven, of which some 400,000 have been built in the course of the seventeen years during which it has maintained its universal leadership. It can thus be said that we at Longbridge know, not only what a small car should be and should do, but also how to achieve that ideal; our experience is recognised as unique. The Austin Eight incorporates all we know about small car design and construction. It has a highly efficiem engine in respect both of performance and economy. Its transmission is robust and silent. . The new design of body and chassis combines strength with lightness to an unusual degree, so that roominess, including more luggage space than in any other small car, has called for no sacrifice of performance. The springing and brakes give every comfort of body and mind, and the “feel” of the car on the road is a revelation of the pitch of refinement than can now be built into even the lowest priced car. I am confident that this new Eight is going to lift small-car motoring onto an entirely new plane of luxury and refinement, while retaining all the economy and dependability for which Austins have so long been famous.
