FACTORY WORK

WAIRARAPA PROSPECTS INQUIRIES BY INDUSTRIAL FIRMS. REGISTER OF GIRLS WANTED. Are there 40 to 60 girls in the Wairarapa available for possible factory employment? That is the reason a register is being compiled by the “Times-Age” as announced on Monday last. Already a number of registrations have been received, but more are wanted if any real indication of the labour market is to be gained for this purpose. An overseas firm about to establish a factory in New Zealand has, as a result of representations made by the “Times-Age,” consented to investigate the potentialities of this district before deciding on any other location. The final decision depends upon a number of factors, one of importance being a supply of suitable labour. Other factors such as factory accommodation, power supply, freight rates, etc., are being investigated and determined separately. The indeterminate factor, however, is that of labour supply and the only manner in which to gauge that is by the compilation of a register of those girls willing and able to accept factory employment should it be offered.

For this purpose, therefore, and by way of a survey of the labour market, would those girls interested send in their names and addresses to “Employment,” ‘‘Times-Age.” There is no obligation in registering. Tlie whole idea is to ascertain if 40 to 60 girls are available for congenial and light work in a modern, hygienic factory making articles of everyday use. The matter is urgent if we are to attract industries to the Wairarapa and registrations are invited from all girls interested, whether they live in Masterton, Carterton, Greytown, Featherston, Martinborough or in any rural area.
