TIMELY ACTION

IN SOUTH-WEST AFRICA SERIOUS CRISIS AVERTED. GERMAN PLAN FRUSTRATED.By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. ■ (Received This Day, 12.50 p.m.) ■■ JOHANNESBURG, May 1. The “Johannesburg Star’s” special correspondent says the Union’s reinforcement of the South-West African police frustrated developments which ' might have raised the whole issue of the Government’s competence to discharge its mandate obligations. There is no evidence of a rising, but the plan contemplated the seizure of the Walvis Bay radio station, and possibly its destruction after signalling others, which would have presaged widespread attempts at sabotage. There is no evidence that the German community as a community was aware of the plans, but sabotage would have precipitated a clash the issue of which would not have been confined to South-West Africa. The arrival of the police steadied a situation needing little for expansion into a minority issue.
