MAY DAY MANIFESTO
BRITISH LABOUR ATTACK ON CONSCRIPTION FRESH SACRIFICES DEMANDED. OVERTURE TO WORKERS IN OTHER COUNTRIES. By Telegraph—Press Association -Copyright. LONDON. May 1. A May Day manifesto of the National Council of Labour declares: “Workers who are still bearing the deadweight burden of the last war are called on to make fresh sacrifices in the nation's service.
"Organised Labour does not flinch at sacrifices which strengthen the nation's defences and protect the people and their homes, but we protest against the Government decision to impose conscription in peace tune in violation of the Prime Minister’s pledges and despite the fact that th? voluntary response for service far exceeded the Government’s provision of the necessary supplies and equipment.” The manifesto asks workers in other countries, especially those where the Governments are preparing for war, to unite with British workers to restrain aggressors.
