TAX ON BICYCLES

» REVENUE FOR TREASURY. The tax on bicycles in France last year netted for the French treasury 106 million francs— nearly six hundred thousand pounds. This showed an increase of 9 million francs over the previous year. As the bicycle tax during 1938 was 12 francs, the receipts indicate that the number of cyclists .in France last year was close to 9,000,000. Collecting the tax is an easy matter. All tobacco shops sell a small metal plate bearing the year, which plate has to be fixed on to the fork shaft, and police stop and fine any cyclist not carrying a license plate. British cyclists visiting France do not have to have this licence plate. They have to show a certificate from the Cyclist Touring Club that they are visitors to France.
