CARTERTON

COLLECTION OF RATES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Town Clerk reported to Thursday’s meeting of the Borough Council that the rates collected during the year amounted to 92.46 per cent of those levied. This, the Clerk stated, was not up to the previous year’s collection. Druids’ Ball. A meeting of the combined ball committee of the Druids’ Lodge was held last evening when there was a very good attendance. Further arrangements were made for the annual ball to be held on May 15. Very encouraging reports of assistance were received. The ball should be one of the most successful and enjoyable held by the lodge. Card Party and Dance. There was a very large attendance at the card tournament held in the Clarevill Social Hall last nighth, and a most enjoyable time was spent by all. The winners of the card prizes were: Ladies, Mrs E. W. Allen and Mrs C. Daysh, tied for first, and divided the prizes. Men: Mrs Patterson (playing as a man), 1; Mr F. Daysh, 2. The consolation prizes went to Mrs C. Jackson 1, and Mr F. Hooper 2. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs A. J. Whitehead, and the spot waltz by Mrs F. Jackson, jun, and Mrs Bradbury. The M.’sC. were Messrs James and S. Fisher. Mr J. Edwards supplied the dance music. A tasty supper was provided. A Boy Injured. Last evening a lad, 15 years of age, named Norman Nielsen, son of Mr and Mrs W. Nielsen, of Dalefield, was cycling down High Street near the Catholic Convent when his attention was attracted by another boy. He tried to cross the road in front of a New Zealand Railways lorry driven by Mr Wilton, who was on his way to Pahiatua. The boy was struck by the side of the vehicle and was thrown heavily to the roadway. He received injuries to his face and his neck. He was attended by Dr R. N. Campbell and taken to Croydon Hospital for treatment.
