WOMEN'S INSTITUTE. MEETING AT HASTWELLS, (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Hastwells Women’s Institute was held on Friday last. Mrs A. V. Madsen presided over a large attendance of members. Mrs Morris and Miss A. Dick were nominated as delegates to attend the meeting to be held at Woodville on April. 27. Mrs Madsen then called on Mrs B. Morriss, of Rongokokako, to demon • strate the making of rag mats and this was watched with great interest, many many trying their skill at this interesting craft. Mrs Morriss also brought with her some beautiful mats she had made. The competition for the best worked d’oiley was won as follows: Seniors, Mrs Morris 1, Mrs Madsen 2, Mrs McKay 3. In the juniors Miss H. Madsen was 1, Miss I. Madsen 2 and Miss K. Larsen 3. These were kindly judged byMrs B. Morriss and Mrs J. P. Sigvertsen. In the game competition which was arranged by Mrs K. Ngatuere and won by Mrs Madsen, quite a number tied for 2nd and 3rd places. The best flower in the garden was won by Mrs Madsen, with Miss H. Madsen 2, and Mrs Burch 3rd. A very dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, the Misses Madsen. The National Anthem brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close. Personal. Mr W. Curry and his daughter, Miss Betty Curry, are visitors to Marlborlough. Lorry Driver Fined. As the result of the lorry he was driving capsizing on the Main South Road about a mile south of the Konini dairy factory on March 13, Ivor Murray Fulton, farm hand, of Rongomai, appeared before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., at the Pahiatua. Magistrate’s Court charged with driving without due care and attention. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Constable Carlyon, giving evidence, stated that at 2.30 p.m. on the afternoon of March 13 he had visited the scene of an accident on the main road at Konini. Defendant’s truck was upside down at the side of the road, and defendant was lying unconscious. On measuring the marks, he found that defendant’s truck had touched the grass on the wrong side 54 yards from where it was lying, had swerved to the left, turned to the right again, and then (rolled over for a'distance of 40 feet, indicating excessive speed. When interI viewed, accused had stated that he was travelling at 25 m.p.h. when the vehicle bore right, and he pulled back. He could remember no more of the accident. Accused knew the steering! was slack, and had examined it, dis-' closing slackness at the foot of the steering column. The Magistrate, in convicting accused, said that accused knew the condition of the vehicle, and had still consented to take it on the road. He could have quite easily have kept in second gear and driven safely. Accused was convicted and fined £2, costs 10s and witnesses expenses £l. OPENING OF FOOTBALL SEASON. EKETAHUNA TEAM TO PLAY PAHIATUA. The following is the Eketahuna senior team to play Pahiatua on Saturday at Eketahuna: Falloon, Reynolds. Low. Howden, R. Johnston, Stone. Fauvel. Hammond, R. Gordon, L. Wattereus, E. Norris, Ngateuri (2). Carroll Wairaihana. Harrison. Lobban. The game will start at 2 p.m. and players are requested to be on the ground at 1.45 p.m. '
