Mr T. E. Trask has been appointed a member of the Taranaki Land Board. The death has occurred of Mr Nelson Keys famous actor and comedian, a London cablegram states. Mr and Mrs P. H. Nathan, of “Llandaff,” Upper Plain, with their son, will leave New Zealand next week on a visit to Sydney. The Wairarapa College Board of Governors, at its meeting last night, decided to send a letter of condolence to Mr Pauling, a janitor, in the loss of his mother.
At last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, extended a welcome to Mr G. T. O’Hara Smith, the newly-ap-pointed Town Clerk, who officially takes up his duties next Monday. Mr lan F. Calder, son of the Rev David Calder, Wellington, secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, has won the third prize (£100) in the senior school architectural competition, held recently at “Brown Hall,”. Shrewsbury, from among a large number of competitors.
At last night’s meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors, the chairman, Mr W. R. Nicol, extended a welcome to Mr A. Owen Jones as the representative of the Trust Lands Trust. Mr Nicol said members were pleased to see Mr Jones on the board, as he had long taken an interest in education. He was sure Mr Jones’s association with the board would be a pleasant and profitable one. Feeling reference to the death of Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., was made by Mr Hugh Morrison, in Wellington yesterday, when a deputation of Wairarapa farmers waited on the Postmast-er-General, the Hon F. Jones. Mr Morrison said the country and Parliament had suffered a severe loss in Mr Howard’s death. He paid a glowing tribute to the entirely impartial way in which Mr Howard had carried out his duties as Chairman of Committees.
The funeral of the late Mrs R. T. Tankersley, which took place in Masterton yesterday, was largely attended by settlers from various parts of the Wairarapa. The Rev J. Davie conducted the services at the house and graveside. Many beautiful floral tributes were received, among which were wreaths from the Masterton branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, the Women Teachers’ Association, the staff and pupils of the Masterton West School, and the Knox P.W.M.U. The pallbearers were Messrs W. E. Tankersley, D. R. Tankersley, H. Tankersley, A. Tankersley, J. J. P. Cotter and A. A. Ball, grandsons of the deceased.
The funeral of the late Mr William John Brady, who was accidentally shot near Wellington on Wednesday night, took place at ttie Masterton Cemetery this morning. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St Patrick’s Church by the Rev Father N. Moore, who also officiated at the graveside. The pallbearers were Messrs W. Orange. J. Curry, W. Green, D. B. Curry. J. Bradbury and W. McArly, The beautiful wreaths received, and the large attendance of mourners testified to the deep sympathy felt for his parents and family. The late Mr Brady, who was well-known in the Masterton district, was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. Brady, Cornwall Street. He was educated at Masterton and had worked in various parts of the district.
