FIRE CONTROL

APPOINTMENT OF BOROUGH REPRESENTATIVES. VIEWS OF MR T. JORDAN. The Masterton Borough Council at a special meeting last night reappointed Councillors Trevor Beetham and W. Kemp as its representatives on the Masterton Fire Board. In thanking them for their work on the board, the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan said: “The levies paid are not in proportion to our representation, in somb respects at any rate.” Referring generally to fire control, Mr Jordan said he was one of those who believed that fire protection was just as much a municipal matter as water or drainage. He was happy to say that the fire underwriters agreed with that principle. Under the proposed new scheme the insurance companies would have a majority of control, which he oelieved was quite right. Local bodies would administer the Fire Brigade and the insurance companies would have a say in approving or otherwise of the estimates.
