STOCK MARKET
ADDINGTON SALE. FAT STEER AND COW PRICES UP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. April 27. A dull sale resulted in all the major sections at the weekly stock market in Addington today. There were many passings of store and fat sheep. The entry of store sheep was the smallest of the season, comprising about 5000 head. A line of four, six and eighttooth wethers from the Chathams made 21s 3d. The ewes were mainly a nondescript lot, a pen of Romney cross six and eight-tooths selling at 15s 3d, and some local two-tooths at 18s. Values for failing-mouthed ewes ranged from 4s to 6s 9d. In the lamb pens one rape lot sold at 11s 9d, and a pen of ewe lambs at Ils 4d. The fat lamb entry was 1100, against the 3000 last week. There were several sales at 9s. and a few pens exceeded 20s. In some cases butchers paid Id a lb more than the schedule price of 7d for quality lambs. Export lambs sold at bare export rates. The fat sheep entry was 4000, compared with the 8000 of a week ago. Near the end of the sale the demand for wethers slipped and, on the average, prices were not as good as those of last week. Ewes, butchers’ and freezing, maintained their values better. The heavy purchases of last week allowed the trade to buy fairly heavily and this, no doubt, had no influence oh the Competition. Extra prime heavy wethers made to 25s 4d; prime heavy, 20s to 22s 6d; prime medium, 18s to 19s 9d; light, to 14s; extra prime heavy ewes, to 20s 7d; prime heavy, 15s to 18s; prime medium, 12s to 14s; light, 6s to Bs. The fat cattle market was very irregular. A small proportion of prime medium weights sold close to the values of a week ago, from 35s to 37s a 1001 b, but heavy steers were down by 15s a head. Unfinished steers were up by 20s a head, and cows by about 15s. The sale Was very dragging in the final stages.
The entry of porkers was small at the beginning of the sale, and values advanced by 2s to 3s a head on the rates of last week and continued at the higher level till the last two races. Prices then eased back. Choppers were in heavy supply and though the sale was good, prices were about 5s easier. Baconers were forward in medium numbers and values showed litthe variation on those of a week ago.
