CARTERTON

BOY INJURED. (“Times-Age” Special.) A son of Mr and Mrs C. H. D. Hercock, of South Carterton, was seriously injured in an accident. It appears that Mr W. Gregor, who was travelling south in his motor car, ran into the boy who was riding a bicycle, the boy falling to the road, suffering concussion, a cut knee and abrasions to his elbow. Dr H. M.' Budd was called to the scene of the accident and as the boy was unconscious he ordered his removal to the Masterton Hospital. Upon inquiry later it was ascertained the boy had a fair night. Personal Items. Mr J. A. Wallace, County Overseer, left yesterday on his annual holiday. He intends going to the Bay of Plenty among other places. Mr Wallace’s duties will be carried out during his absence by Mr H. J. McKenzie. Mr and Mrs Geo. Gaskin, of Palmerston North, were visitors to Carterton during the weekend and were staying with Mrs Gaskin’s mother, Mrs A. Jensen, Belvedere Street. Mrs P. J. Bannin and her sister from Wellington were visitors to Carterton this week. Mr and Mrs Archie Banks, of Wellington, paid a visit to Mr Banks’s parents this week. POULTRY AND PIGEON SOCIETY. ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. The annual general meeting of the Wairarapa Poultry, Pigeon and Cape Bird Society was held at St Mark’s schoolroom. There was a representative attendance of members from Masterton to Martinbdrough, presided over by Mr Geo A. Edge. The report and balance sheet were adopted, the latter showing a credit balance of £l4. For the first show there had been 400 entries. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, Mr B. Roberts, M.'P.; president, Mr G. A. Edge (re-elected); vicepresidents, Messrs J. Robertson, M.P., D. L. Taverner, W. Howard Booth, Jas F Thompson, D. J. Rowland, and the Rev W. F. Stent; executive committee, Messrs G. A. Edge (chairman), J. Wilson, J. M. Nicholls, O. Anderson, J. H. Good, the Rev W. F. Stent, Mr and Mrs A. McPhee, Miss Taucher; secretary ancj treasurer, Mr O. Anderson (reelected). . The appointment of judges for the show to be held on July 13 and 14 in tlie King’s Theatre were left to the executive to arrange. Word has been received that the North Island championship for Black Red ' English Game and Old English Game Bantams, had been allotted to the Wairarapa Poultry Association. Schedules will be issued after the executive committee has met to make ai rangemen ts. It is expected that a very large entry of game birds will be exhibited at this show in view of the fact that the championship will be competed for. Several cups and ribbons have already been donated for the show which is expected will provide an outstanding display of poultry. WEDDING. OAKEY—BEALE. A wedding of widespread interest was celebrated at St. Mark’s Church, Carterton, last evening, when Miss Joan Elizabeth (Betty) Beale, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur W. Beale ,of Rexwood Street, was married to Mr Arthur Leslie Oakey, son of Mrs F. E. J. Oakey and the late Mr A. Oakey, of Wellington. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. W. F. Stent,. Vicar of St. Mark’s. The bride, who was escorted by her father, was attired in a beautiful gown of white bridal tulle, with a'tulle veil, silver juliet cap and shoes to tone. She carried a white prayer book. The bridesmaids were Mrs N. E. Stretton, matron of honour (Auckland), Misses Pamela Wilder (Hastings), Maude Rutherford (Masterton), and Mary Lawrence (Carterton), who wore blue Swiss muslin with white hailstone spots, white Valencine lace, and Juliet caps. They each carried a loose bunch of pink, mauve and white chrysanthemums. Dr. A. C. Oakey, of Greytown, was best man. and Messrs J. R. P. Oakey (Wellington), I. S. Moody (Carterton), V. Ryan (Wellington) were groomsmen. The hymn, “O Perfect Love" was sung, and Mrs D. Carrington (Wellington) sang “O For The Wings of a Dove.” A reception was held in the State ballroom where a number of toasts were honoured. The bride’s mother, Mrs A. W. Beale, received the guests (who numbered about 150) in a gown of mushroom pink lace and carried a pink bouquet, the bridegroom’s mother wore a georgette ensemble, brown hat to tone ’and carried a bouquet of brown and gold flowers. During the reception Mrs D. Carrington sang two songs. Mr and Mrs Oakey were the recipient of many beautiful and costly gifts. They will spend their honeymoon in the South Island where they will enjoy a motor tour and upon their return will take up their residence in Gisborne. Among the guests were: Mr J. S. Hipkins, Auckland; Mr and Mrs E. G. Shrimpton, Wellington; Mr and Mrs and Miss G. Shrimpton. Wellington; Mr and Mrs Dave Carrington, Wellington; Mrs A. and Miss Eileen Brown, Wanganui; Mr and Mrs J. Bailey, Wellington; Mrs L. B. Bull, Auckland; Mrs H. Woodroffe, Auckland; Mrs N. E. Stretton, Auckland; Mrs E. T. Wilder, Hastings; Miss Pam Wilder, Hastings. Card Tournament. The weekly card tournament in connection with the Carterton Troop of the Boy Scouts was held in St. Mary’s Hall last evening. There was a good attendance and the prizes were won as follow:—Ladies: Mrs Parker, 1; Mrs Martin, 2. Men: \'r R. Banks, 1; Mrs A. Knutson (acting), 2. The monthly aggregate was won by Mrs P. Hodder and Mr J. Hooper.

Golf Club Draw. The following is the draw for the first medal round of the captain’s trophy, to be held on the Taratahi links on Saturday next, commencing at 1 p.m: —From No 1 tee: Goodin v Steel; Smith v Brown; B. Beaven v Lane; Dwane v Sid Booth: Fitzgerald v Tankersley; Harry v Bond. Successful Poultry Breeder. Mr Geo A. Edge, of South Carterton, a very successful poultry breeder, has received an enquiry from a Fiji resident asking him to quote for six Rhode Island Red pullets and a cockerel, four and a cockerel and a cockerel alone. Mr Edge informed the “TimesAge” representative he was placing the quota this week. The same breeder has recently had a similar application from Ceylon. Poppy Day Sales. The final returns in connection with the Carterton Poppy Day sales show that 1209 emblems were disposed of, realising £6O 9s—a record. Football. Word has been received in Carterton by Mr H. M. B. Trapp, that his son, who was recently transferred from the Inspectors’ Office at the Bank of New South Wales, Wellington, to the Sydney Branch, will don the jersey for a Newcastle team this season. He states in a letter that the standard of football in the Newcastle district was not up to New Zealand standard. He had already had a game as a five-eighth.
