LABOUR OPPOSITION TRADES UNION COUNCIL ANNOUNCEMENT, BREACH OF FAITH ALLEGED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received This Day, 12.25 p.m.) LONDON, April 20. Mr Chamberlain’s statement was received with Ministerial cheers and Opposition derision and shouts of ‘■peace in our time.” It is officially announced that the Trade Union Council has reaffirmed firm opposition by trade unions to any form of compulsory military service. Earl Stanhope made a statement similar to Mr Chamberlain’s in the House of Lords. Lord Snell said the Government had no excuse for breaking the promise that- there would be no conscription in peace time. Labour felt that it had been betrayed. National unity would be suspended, if not broken. The Labour Party would reghrd itself as free to take whatever action might seem right.
