ROAD CYCLING

LAST SATURDAY’S RACE. (Notes by “Three-Speed.”) > The Wairarapa Amateur Cycling Club’s second race of the season was held on Saturday from Masterton to Te Whiti and return under sealed handicap conditions, the first race of this kind to be held by the club. Ten riders faced the starter and got away from a rolling start. The scratch men set a hot pace from the start but were unable to wear down the others. B. Dooling rode an excellent race to gain first place, notwithstanding that he crashed the other night while training. He believes in getting down to hard training and it is a pity some of the other riders do not follow his example. G. Goodin, of Carterton,, was going splendidly at the finish and gained second place and third fastest time. He was left at the start and was about two miles behind the field at the turn but rode on to catch the bunch and be in the sprint. Consistent training will see him further improve. M. Graham, who won the opening race, cycled well to gain third place on Saturday. This rider is improving rapidly and more will be heard of him this season. E. Lefort and C. Gourlay were nonstarters on Saturday as they were suffering from influena. J. Brader and L. Green each rode a fine race, the latter gaining fourth place. I think, however, that these competitors could do with more training before they are really fit. This remark also applies to J. McAliece and O. Morris, who found the going too fast for them on Saturday. K. Gilbert, a first-year rider, was left on Saturday but kept going to, do the whole distance. This rider should do well when he settles down. K. Woollett and R. Copp again made the fastest times. The prospects for the season are very bright and if the riders will pay due attention to training, the district should produce some top notch road cyclists in the near future.
