THE PROBLEM OF THE NOSE

DISGUISE ITS FAULTS. SOME USEFUL REMEDIES: Although there is very little which can be • done to alter the actual shape of your nose, there is much which you can do to disguise its faults and make it appear much more flattering than is really .the case. There is the large nose, which, unfortunately, is often associated with a receding chin, and the two combined give the face a very sharp appearance. To balance the features you must naturally cover up some of the prominence of the nose, and secondly you must bring the chin into line so, that the face acquires more balance. This can be done by using a dark shade of powder on the nose, neck, and beneath the chin and a paler shade on the chin itself. Do not make the mouth conspicuous with vivid lipsticks, as this will draw attention to both the nose and the chin, and that, after all, is something which we desire to avoid. It is better to draw the attention to the eyebrows. Well-defined brows with long eyelashes, and in the evening a plentiful use of eye shadow, will do much to create an effective illusion of a well-balanced nose and chin. The inner point of the eyebrow should be plucked so that it ends just outside the outer point of the nose. Imagine that a straight line is running down the face from the eyebrows to the chin, then pluck the brow so that the straight line would be about oneeighth of an inch away from the outer corner of the nose.

Your hairdressing will also help. Remember that a large nose cannot bear severity in hairdressing, and all waves and curls must be soft and loose, with the forehead covered as much as is possible. Side partings are best suited, and the length of hair should be kept on a level with .the chinline. Hats with brims should always be worn, as a brimless hat will only draw the attention to the nose, and will make it appear much larger tnnn is actually the case. If 'you have a long nose pluck the brows, so that the inner point of the eyebrow is level with the inner point of the eye, and see that the outer point of the brow is at least three-quarters of an inch from the hairline. This will give greater balance between the features. Sovereign Remedies. And now for that greatest of all beauty curses—a shiny nose. This shininess can be caused by one of three things—excessive oiliness, excessive dryness, or just sheer cussedness. All three can be cured, so there is not the slightest reason why your nose should shine. Greasy or oily noses can usually be associated with enlarged pores and blackheads, and before any hope of cure can be expected these must first be remedied. Procure a nice, clean .toothbrush, a good soap, and a basin of lukewarm water. Make a good lather with the soap and then work it in with the toothbrush so that the blood will rush to the surface of the skin and carry away impurities. After a few minutes of this treatment rinse the nose with clean water and dab with an as-tringent-lotion. A very simple astringent is one consisting of three parts of witch-hazel and one part of rosewater. If the nose is very oily a medicated lotion can be dabbed on to the skin at the completion of the treatment. As a powder foundation dab the nose with an antishine mixture. Do not expect miraculous results, but, if the above treatment is carried out each night and morning, you will notice a definite improvement at the end of a fortnight. „ A nose which shines simply because it is too dry will naturally require a nourishing treatment, and this can be quite simply given by mixing together equal parts of almond oil' and lemon juice and massaging it into the nose after your usual cleansing treatment. If only a teaspoonful is used it can be massaged into the skin until practically the whole amount has been absorbed, and will leave just enough moisture to act as a. splendid powder foundation. Naturally, you should apply a good skin food each night and allow it to remain on until morning. Green or Mauve Powder. A nose which is too red is always noticeable and disfiguring. It can be caused by bad circulation, indigestion, constipation, or broken veins. Whatever the cause, you must seek it immediately and take internal remedies until the cause is, removed. If bad circulation is the cause, then exercise and deep breathing will help. If it is constipation the remedy is in your own hands. If it is broken veins the following course of nourishing treatment will be of some help, although it will, not completely remedy the fault. Cleanse the skin each night with cream, remove the surplus very gently with face tissues, and then spread on a generous layer of nourishing cream. Allow to remain on until morning and then cleanse again and apply a refining lotion. If you keep up this treatment for three weeks you will then notice a great difference in the colour of your nose. For make-up purposes use a faintly green foundation cream or a green or mauve powder. If you have never used these shades you may think that they are just a little bizarre,, but they are not at all noticeable, and are excellent for disguising noses which arc not a natural shade. So, if your nose is not all that you could desire, do not despair, but do your best to correct its faults, and you will then feel much happier and more beautiful.
