BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL. PARKING IN QUEEN STREET. In the absence of the Mayor. Mr T. Jordan, the deputy-Mayor, Councillor W. White, presided at the monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, held- on Monday night. Others present were: Councillors Trevor Beetham, J. Ninnes, A. T. Jackson, H. E. Gardner, R. Russell, G. D. Wilson. W. Kemp and A. D. Low. The Mayor was granted leave of absence. A letter was received from the Memorial Park Lighting Committee, thanking the council for the free use of the Park Oval for a football carnival. It was resolved that a circular letter from the Transport Department dealing with regulations and the need for the, protection of cyclists be handed to the Borough officials for their information. The Masterton Harrier Club was granted the use of the Park dressing sheds during the coming season. The Masterton County Council is to be thanked for its contribution of £3O towards the upkeep of the cemetery. On the recommendation of the Gas and Abbatoir Committee it was decided to contribute £25 towards an exhibit for the gas industry at the Centennial Exhibition.

Three billiard room proprietors and fourteen taxi-drivers' were granted a renewal of their licenses.

The Municipal Association advised that under the new scale of subscriptions the council’s contribution would be increased from £lO to £l5 a year. A further letter was received from the Midland Hotel asking that an area outside the hotel be declared a nonparking area. After some discussion it was decided to refer the matter back to the Works Committee.

A deputation representing the Park Croquet Club waited on the council asking that sundry alterations and additions be made to the croquet greens. It was decided that a sub-sommittee consisting of Councillors Gardner, Russell and Ninnes was set up to consider the deputation’s requests and report to the next meeting of the council.
