TE WHARAU
GOLF CLUB COMPETITIONS. (“Times-Age” Special.) A stroke competition was played on the links on Saturday afternoon, there being a good number of members playing, all of whom enjoyed the improved playing conditions after the recent rain. In the first challenge for the Kummerstein Cup Mrs Schofield defeated Mrs J. Bannister. Mrs A. McGregor returned the best card for ladies with a net 57 and Miss Bannister with a net 60 did the best of the others. A. McGregor won the men’s contest with a 64, R. Vennell being runner-up with 65. Next Saturday the first round of the Stableford competition will be played, the draw being posted in the club house. On Tuesday afternoon a mixed foursome was played, the winners to hold the silver buttons. Mr and Mrs A. McGregor handed in the best card with a net 62.
All players are requested to make themselves conversant with the amended local rules, a copy of which is posted in the club house. At a meeting of the committee held during the weekend, Mr S. Gray and Mr A. McGregor were appointed delegates to represent the club at a meeting to be held at Tyneside to discuss matters regarding play for the Donald Cup.’ The meeting will be neld on Monday evening next at 7.30 o’clock, and delegates from the four country clubs, viz., Homewood, Te Wharau, Tyneside, and Wainuioru will be present. The Donald Cup was presented to the Homewood, Whareama and Te Wharau clubs for competition in 1935 by Mr Albert Donald, 'of Masterton, and it has now been decided to allow the Tyneside and Wainuioru clubs to compete for it. This will mean that there will be greater and keener competition amongst the country clubs. Te Wharau hold the cup, having won it from Homewood last season. School May be Closed. Owing to the falling off of the attendance at the local school it is feared that the school will be closed in the very near future. It is understood that the present teacher, Mr H. Winter, has been transferred to the Rongokokako School. Should the school be closed the prospects at present for re-open-ing it are not at all bright, and it may remain closed for a number of years. At one time there were over 30 children on the roll.
