The officials of the South Wairarapa Gun Club aie to be heartily congratulated on the success of the meeting on Saturday and especially to Messrs Thomas, McDonald and Swainsoru who were untiring in their efforts to make the day an enjoyable one for all. Visiting shooters were loud in their praise of the arrangements and the manner in which the shoot was conducted. Messrs lan Sutherland and Swainson were the only members of the local club who wre prominent in the matches, the others shooting considerably below club form. The Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal* Affairs, who was also a competitor, in presenting the prizes to the winners, expressed keen pleasure at being present. As gun club members knew, he took a very great interest in shooting and was endeavouring to secure further support from the Government for the gun clubs. He congratulated the winner, Mr H. K. Smith, of Masterton, on his good shooting, a feature of which was the excellent timing displayed. This, in the speaker’s opinion, was everything in shooting. Mr Parry also complimented Mr Sutherland. the runner-up, for his score of eighteen birds, a very creditable effort for . a young shooter against more experienced competitors. In conclusion Mr Parry expressed the wish that Messrs Smith and Sutherland would attend the special Centennial championship match to be held next year in Wellington. The Minister’s remarks were received enthusiastically. Mr Smith, the winner, suitably replied on behalf of the runner-up and himself. Mr McDonald, on behalf of the South Wairarapa Gun Club, thanked the visiting members for attending in such large numbers, thus making the shoot such an unqualified success. He extended a warm welcome to the Minister, whose presence was particularly pleasing to all lovers of the sport. The Minister they all knew was a keen Supporter of trap shooting. Mr MacDonald’s remarks were warmly applauded. In the six-bird ej e-opener sweepstake match (37 competitors), Messrs I. Sutherland, M. McLeod. H. Swainson, L. Raynor and V. Harris and N. Swanson tied for the second prize, SOCIAL SECURITY SCHEME. POSITION OF MAORIS. There is a certain amount of misunderstanding among people especially the Maori race, as to their obligations under the Social Security Scheme. There are several cases in this district and in other parts also where the Maoris are quite ignorant of the fact that they have to register and it is more than likely that a good proportion will, through no fault of their own, have to pay the penalty for default. It is true, however, that a great many are conversant with the English language, but on the other hand there are also a number who are not. Personal Items. Mrs Ruby Edwards, of Ratana, is the guest of her sister-in-law, Mrs J. Cowan. Mrs W. Waiwera, who had been the guest of her sister in Wellington, has returned home. Mesdames Te Maari and Enoka, who have been on a visit to Tologa Bay, returned on Thursday evening. Dry Spell Broken. The long spell of dry weather was broken on Wednesday night, when light rain from the north fell but during the night the wind changed to a southerly and rain fell incessantly on Thursday and Friday. Creeks which hitherto were dry beds are now carrying a good deal of water. As a result the lagoons are fast filling up. This will tend tc make shooting conditions most unsatisfactory unless the outlet of the lake is opened very soon. It is, however, expected that when conditions improve, the work will be undertaken early next week.

The rain came as a great relief not only to farmers but to those who relied on tanks for water for domestic purposes. One locality which relied on tanks for their supply had been without water for the past month, having to cart water from the local factory. Some time ago an officer of the Health Department paid a visit to the settlement mentioned and inspected the tanks in the various* dwellings and it was understood that the department intended to supply tanks to those in need of them. However, nothing has been done. An inspection was also made of a source where it was likely to draw water from to supply the settlement. It was proposed in this case to put in a "ram” but this idea is also in the lap of the gods. Golf Club Competitions. A stroke competition was played by members of the local golf club on Saturday, the ladies’ match being won by Mrs Gordon Sutherland and the men’s byG. Munro. The first round for the William Hume Memorial Cup will start on Saturday. Women’s Institute. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held in the Memorial Hall on Thursday, Mrs Spicer presiding over a splendid attendance of members, despite the inclement weather. There was a large entry for the shortbread competition, which was won by Mrs Priest, with Mrs Lovegrove second. A very interesting talts was given by | Miss Cock on her experiences during her recent visit to England. The speaker was-accorded a hearty vote of thanks by acclamation. Community singing, led by Mrs Mc-

Clelland (piano) and Mrs Lovegrove, was much enjoyed. The hostesses for the afternoon wer; Mesdames Atkinson, Carter and Gray. The birthday meeting of the institute will be held next month. Tologa Bay Wedding. A quiet wedding took place recently at Tologa Bay when Albert, second sor of Mrs Te Maari and the late Mr Tokc Te Maari was married to Miss Mary Korau, daughter of Mr and Mrs Korau Tologa Bay.
