AURORA’S STAR IMPROVING SORT

(By "The Cynic.”)

Aurora’s Star was not suited by the turning nature of the Feilding track’at Easter, but that racing has done her no harm and she may be seen to better advantage next month on her home course.

Aurora’s Star leaves the impression that the best has not yet been seen of her, and, as she is built on much more generous proportions than her dam or her solid half-sister, Aurora’s Love, she may go quite a long way in flat racing before her turn comes to take on hurdling.

Greatly Improved. , War Lap is a very hard horse to follow, and his Feilding form certainly did not suggest very bright prospects for the Stratford meeting. However, the Lapidary-Violetto gelding revealed his best form and won really well. War Lap has been turned out in good order recently by the Wanganui mentor, H. W. Johnston, and he may be coming more solid with age.

Felicitation. Felicitation is still under treatment for her ligament trouble, and hopes are entertained that she will come right again.

Premising. Peter Beckford has taken a long time to strike form this season, but the effort of the Hunting Song gelding at Waipukurau was sufficiently good enougn to hold out hopes for him. Peter Beckford should continue to improve, and he may yet come into his own again before the season is over. Good Race. Another good race went down to the credit of Vascones at Stratford, and she was not disgraced in failing by a head to concede 28 pounds to Veldette, who is bred from a half-sister to that former good class Awapuni galloper Crown Area. Vascones is standing up to her racing very well, and it is possible that she will race at Awapuni next month. • ; ; Spelling. Varimond, who showed really solid form at the autumn meetings, has gone out for her winter spell. This Ally is growing all the time and should be up to good class next season. She is an experiment in breeding, being by Limond, from Variable, who is by Pombal, a half-brother to Limond. Koatanui Stud does not often stray from the accepted precepts of breeding, but this experiment appears to have been a happy one. FoxlovePassaform beat Foxlove when in receipt of’ 1 lb in the Riverton Cup, and was handicapped to give the latter 31b in the Easter Handicap, in which Passaform again finished in front of the Gallant Fox gelding. Foxlove won over a mile on the third day at Riverton, but Passaform was not in the field, and in being asked to meet the latter, after two defeats, on worse terms in the Timaru Cup, reads harshly treated. Instead of giving Passaform 51b after getting 31b and a beating, it seems as if Foxlove should be getting weight. Beaupartir. Beaupartir has contested 13 races and has been only once unplaced. That was when he ran a very close fourth behind Smoke Screen, Stretto and Gay Son in the King’s Plate of one mile, at th’ Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting. On that occasion Smoke Screen had to establish a New Zealand record of lmin 35 3-ssec to win, and even though he was unplaced, Beaupartir registered a meritorious performance. With five wins and seven seconds to his credit, Beaupartir has earned £2805 ih stakes, besides a gold cup valued at £lOOO, and his latest form has been so good that he appears certain to achieve further successes soon.

Southland Jumpers for North. Present intentions are that Black Banner and Faculties will be raced in the North Island during the winter, the circuit including the Manawatu and Wanganui meetings, which lead up to the Great Northern Steeplechase meeting. Black Banner was none the worse for his three hard races' at Riverton, and the Balboa gelding should more than hold his own against the solid opposition he is likely to encounter in the North Island. His ability as a jumper and .a stayer, coupled with the fact that he is able to carry big burdens, should make him an interesting candidate on the circuit. Faculties has been in regular work in recent weeks, and has made a good recovery frorp the knee injury he received at the Winton meeting in February. Before the Riverton meetingFaculties was regularly worked at Riverton, and there appeared little amiss with him. At the top of his form Faculties' is not far short of Black Banner’s class, and as he has already been a winner this season he should not be long in reaching his best. If Faculties and Black Banner carry out the campaign at present proposed for them they will be under the care of the Heddon Bush trainer, F. J. Boyle. Death of Sunward. The steeplechaser Sunward, owned by Mr C. L. Orbell, was found dead in his box at F. Trilford’s stable on Wednesday apparently having expired without any semblance of struggle. When given the usual attention overnight, the Lord Quex —Sundust gelding seemed to be in excellent health, and to all outward appearances was in better condition than at any time during his career. His loss is a serious one, in view of the dearth of steeplechasers at the present time. Sunward was an unusual horse, with a special facility at Riccarton. Two years ago he won the Enfield Steeplechase and was second in the Hunt Cup, negotiating the big fences without a mistake. Next winter a succession of falls over small obstacles was recorded against him, and he gained’a reputation for clumsiness, but on returning to Riccarton he again fenced finely, and won the Enfield and was runner-up to Valpeen in the Beaufort. Prior to being raced over country, Sunward was a winner in hurdle races. The Timid Colt. The Beau Here —Timid colt for whom G. Price p’aid lOOgns at the Sydney sales is a brother to Beaucaire and a half-brother to Timorous and Quietly, who were bred at Westmere when their dam was located there. Timid is is an Eiglish mare by Kildare 11. from Ardesia, by Spearmint. This colt’s brother Beaucaire dead-heated in the A.J.C. Breeders’ Plate early this season. Another Start. Mr Alan Cooper, who raced Talking Mala, and others, re-entered the ranks of owners when he purchased the four-year-old 'Tippler horse Micawber fram the Randwick trainer B. Payten on the morning prior to the third day’s racing at the A.J.C. Autumn meeting. The horse was the subject of a plunge at a short quotation, but was beaten in a close finish by Mildura. Mr Cooper has since made further purchase at the yearling sales. RACING FIXTURES April 2.7. 29—South Canterbury. April 28, 29—Dannevirke (at Woodville). April 29, May I—Nelson.

WAVERLEY RACES DEAD HEAT IN PRINCIPAL RACE. STEEPLE TO SPORTING SONG. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WAVERLEY, April 22. So far the decision to hold an autumn meeting at Waverley has met with success. Last year the club made a handy profit and this year it should further strengthen its position. The weather was fine for Saturday’s gathering and the attendance large. The course, benefited by rain during the week, was in excellent condition. The totalisator turnover was £11,743. The £739 less betting was largely because of the field for the chief event being reduced to four. Results: —
