REPLY TO GERMANY

THE SMALLER EUROPEAN NATIONS AGGRESSION NOT FEARED. BUT WILL BE OPPOSED IF NECESSARY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, April 22. A number of the smaller nations mentioned in President Roosevelts appeal to Herr Hitler and Signor Mussolini have replied to Germany's questions on April 19 asking whether they feared aggression. The Netherlands Government replied that it does not feel threatened, but will defend its country by all possible means in the event of the outbreak of any war. It is understood that the Belgian Government's reply states that Germany, Britain and France answered President Roosevelt in 1937 by guaranteeing Belgian integrity. The Government has no reason to doubt any guarantor.

The Finnish Government replied that it does not feel its neutrality is menaced by Germany. The Swiss Government declares it is confident that its neighbours will respect Swiss neutrality, but it has decided to fight for independence if necessary. “We do not feel threatened,” is the verbal reply by Sweden. The Danish Government is reported to have replied that Denmark does not feel threatened.

It is understood that Lithuania has replied that she does not fear a German attack, and has asked nobody to assist her.

The Lithuanian Government's reply to the German question .whether .it feared aggression refers to Herr Hitler’s agreement on the occasion of the cession of Memel under which Germany promised never to resort to force against Lithuania. The Rumanian Government replied that it did not consider itself menaced but threatening developments on the frontier had necessitated precautionary measures. WILL FIGHT IF ATTACKED.
