CONTRACT LICENCES
SCHOOL BUS APPLICATION. VIEWS OF TRANSPORT AUTHORITY. “How many of these licences do we want? We have three or four in Masterton now, is there any reason for this additional application?” asked the No. 2 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr P. Skoglund, in Masterton yesterday when an application was received from J. W. Thornton and Son for a contract licence. Applicant said he had secured a school bus contract and had had a special vehicle built. There was a demand for his services and he understood that two other Masterton carriers, who formerly catefed for such work, were now declining it. Mr Skoglund: “The more licences that are granted the less business for those already on the road. Because you have a school bus there is no reason why you should' secure an additional licence. If you were not in the field someone else would get the work?” Mr Thornton: “Probably so.”
In stating that he would reserve his decision, Mr Skoglund'said: “I will wait until I return to Wellington and investigate the licences held by the men mentioned. With those licences in force I do not feel inclined to grant another one.”
