CARTERTON

SWIMMING CLUB. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. ("Times-Age” Special.) A fitting wind-up to the season’s activities was held in the band room on Wednesday evening when the club held its annual dance' and presentatidn of trophies won during the season. The music was supplied by Miss V. Irwin and Messrs T. and G. Udy, and Mr J. Manley, as M.C., kept proceedings going well. A dainty supper was served, adding greatly to the enjoyment of the occasion. At an interval in the evening Mr J. B. Lawrence, patron of the. club, presented the prizes won during the season as under: —Wairarapa 50yds Championship Cup: Rex Lawrence. Club 100yds Championship Cup: Rex Lawrence. Parton Cup for aggregate points during the season: Rex Lawrence. Intermediate Cup: Alan Pinfold. Junior Cup: Graham Burt and Jim Berry, who will hold the cup for six months each. Cassidy Cup, for aggregate points for ladies: Miss Lola Hopkins. Junior Girls’ Championship Cup: Miss V. Merwood. Les Sorenson Cup: F. Gardiner. - Wairarapa Backstroke Championship Cup: L. McGuire (Masterton). Senior Dive: Miss D. Crawley. Junior Dive: ,D. McKenzie. In addition to the main clips each receives a miniature, which remains the property of the winner. The cups won by Mr Rex Lawrence during the season’s swimming were presented to Mr Lawrence* by the President, Mr L. Fairbrother. During the past season Carterton won the Wairarapa Relay Championship for the first l time. The members of the team were R. Lawrence, J. Yule, A. Pinfold and F. Gardiner, and these received the cup, and also a miniature each, presented by the Club.

Anzac Day Service. The Anzac Day Service will be held in Carterton on Tuesday next. The address at the service will be delivered by Mr J. H. Irving, of Masterton. The school children will hold a service at the school at 9.30 a.m„ and will be addressed by the headmaster, Mr W. E. Fossette. An Excellent Record. At yesterday’s monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council the Clerk informed Councillors that the rate payments had been exceptional and that 99.7 per cent had been received. The chairman and Councillors expressed gratification at such a splendid result. Personal. Mr H. “Shake” Masson, son of the late Mr W. T. Massort, of TC KauWKata', is at present on a visit to Carterton. News has been received in Carterton that Mr L. H. Smart, who has been attending the Sydney Royal. Show, will leave for home by tonight’s'inter-col-onial steamer. Mr C. C .Callender accompanied by his mother will spend the weekend at Ruamati Beach, Paraparaumu. Croquet. The official wind-up to a successful croquet season was held on the Carterton Bowling grounds on Saturday when the Parton Challenge Gold Brooches were played for. These trophies were competed for three times during the season and the .final contest last Saturday was won by Mesdames W. C. M. Sorensen and F. G. Bath. A tasty afternoon tea was provided. Church Service. A Church of England service will be conducted at Waihakeke at 2 p.m. on Sunday by the Vicar, Rev W. F. StentOn Tuesday next a Patronal Festival will be held. Poppy Day. Members of the Women’s Division are busy today disposing of poppies for the Carterton Branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. They are aiming for a record sale and up to 10 o’clock had sold several hundred poppies. y. Obituary. The death occurred yesterday at "Waitangi,” Moreton Road, of Mrs Caroline Martin, widow of Mr James Martin, at the age of 81 years. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon after a service at the house commencing at 12.45 p.m.
