POPPY DAY
ANNUAL SALE TOMORROW. Tomorrow is Poppy Day. A committee of ladies under the direction of the Mayoress of Masterton, Mrs T. Jordan, will conduct the sale of Flanders poppies throughout the borough. The poppies are intended to be worn on Anzac Day as the national symbol of remembrance of fallen soldiers, and the proceeds derived from the sales will be utilised by the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association for the alleviation of distress amongst ex-service men during the winter months, when the cost of living is dearer, and work is not so plentiful. Last year’s response in Masterton was £199 16s 4d and it is expected that this year’s returns will be even greater. The sum of £268 6s 5d was expended in relief by the association in Masterton last winter. The total poppy sales for the Wairarapa district last year was £329 Is Id and the association expended in relief throughout the district, the sum of £367 11s sd. The association appeals to the public to receive the poppy sellers and to respond in the same liberal manner.
