PERSONAL ITEMS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mrs N. Taylor has found it necessary to enter Lewisham Hospital to undergo treatment. Mr F. Slocombe from Invercargill Middle School, has been appointed assistant at the High School and will arrive in Featherston next month. Miss J. Horwell, Timaru, is the guest of Miss Suzanne Collins, “Tekopura.” Both Miss Collins and Miss Horwell are playing in the Autumn foursomes at the Hutt. Drought Broken. The drought broke early yesterday morning when light rain began to' fall, continuing .all day, and getting heavier towards evening. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Featherston School committee was held on Tuesday evening, when Mr J. W. Holland presided. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £45 17s 6a, and accounts amounting to £ll 10s 7d were passed. The Education Board advised that permission was granted to senior handwork classes to use a room in the manual training school. That fence at High School ground would be inspected seme time and attended to. In connection witn the Centennial celebrations, the Chief Commissioner of the Girl Guides Association advised that a camp of some 600 Guides would be held at Tauherenikau Racecourse during January next, but extra accommodation was necessary for,some 50 to 60 Guides of Hanger age from Australia, and it was thought Featherston and Greytown School buildings could accommodate them. It was decided that the committee was prepared to place every facility possible at the disposal of the Guides.
The Department advised that the necessary preliminary work had been put in hand for the new school buildings, and tenders would shortly be called for the extra class rooms required. The Boara advised that cleaners and caretakers were covered for accident insurance, out in the event of persons being employed for extraordinary services notice should be given by the committee to obtain a special cover. .
As many pupils from outside districts were now attending the school, it ws decided to apply to the Department for a grant to obtain the necessary equipment to supply them with hot malted, milk or cocoa during the lunch nour. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr J. Moriarty, who had had presented a shield for inter-house football competition.
