CARTERTON

MINIATURE RIFLES CLUB. ("Times-Age" Special.) The Carterton Miniature Rifles Club held a shoot last evening. There was again a large muster including several new recruits. Good scores were made by the old members and after a few more evenings’ tuition a commencement will be made with competition shooting. Owing to next Tuesday being Anzac Day the shooting night next week will be Thursday. MASONIC LODGE. ANNUAL INSTALLATION. The ■ installation of Mr Geo. Brown, S.W., as Worshipful Master of St Mark’s Lodge No. 53, and the investiture of officers took• place in the lodge room, Carterton, last evening. There was a large attendance of officers from all parts. The ceremony was conducted by the Rt Wor Bro J. H. Jerram. The officers for 1939-40 are as follows:—W.M., Bro Geo Brown; D.M., Bro R. Leith, P.M.; S.W. Bro Ben Sewell; J.W., Bro R. N. Campbell; Chaplain V.W. Bro W. F. Stent, G. treasurer, Bro W. Gregor; secretary, Bro R. Smith, P.M.; D. of C., W. Bro J. J. Knox-Smith, P.M.; P.G.S.; S.D., Bro L. J. Fairbrother; J.D., Bro J. L. Harris; organist, Bro P. L. Darke; I. Bro H. B. Keenan; S.S., Bro J. V. Gustofsen; J.S., Bro G. G. Hart; Tyler, Bro J. A. T. Stevens. Birthday Party. Mr Robert W. Nunn, of Carterton, who is staying with his son at Tuai, Waikaremoana, in the Gisborne district, recently celebrated his 79th birthday. To mark the event his son and daughter-in-law arranged a birthday party for him and a very pleasant time was spent by the large number of friends present, of whom Mr Nunn has made many during his stay at Tuai. A sumptuous birthday supper was provided and a birthday cake decorated with 79 candles. At an appropriate time the candles were lit and blown out by the guest of the evening, who also cut the cake. Mr Prior proposed the health of Mr Nunn, which was heartily; toasted to the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Mr Nunn suitably responded. Games and competitions were enjoyed by all; and Mr Nunn sang several songs. When Mr Nunn left Carterton for Tuai, he was not enjoying the best of health, and his many friends will be pleased to know that his health has shown a wonderful improvement during his stay at Tuai. Scalding Accident A young man named A. E. Hack, employed at Mr Vaughan’s butchery, had the misfortune to badly scald one of his feet while at work. He was taken home and attended by a doctor. Personal. Mrs H. A. Philp, of Winchester, ■4* Canterbury, is visiting her sister, Mrs W. Wadham, Brooklyn Road, Carterton. Mr and Mrs J. Fisher, of Clareville, have returned from a visit to Eltham. Carterton Public Library. At the annual meeting of subscribers of the Carterton Public Library last evening, the chairman of the committee, Mr W. Vaughan, presided, and others present were Miss Wolters, - Miss Flynn, Mrs C. J. Fisher, the Rev H. White, Messrs A. E. Hall, W. McPherson, H. T. Leete, R. A. Copeland, L. Clark, R. J. Trethewey, and the librarian, Mrs Adair. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £Bl. The credit on the year’s working was £6 6s sd, the expenditure being £152 11s 2d and the receipts £l5B 17s 7d. Included in the expenditure was an amount of £45 10s 7d for new books. In moving the adoption of the statement the chairman remarked that the outgoing committee was one of the best the library had ever had. The year had been successful financially, and the library and fittings had been much improved. He desired to express thanks for assistance to all members of the committee, especially Miss Wolters, Mr Leete, and the librarian. Thanks were also due to Mr Chas. Barber for auditing the books. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Chairman, Mr W. Vaughan; vice-chairman, Mr A. E. Hall; committee, Miss Flynn, the Rev H. White, Messrs H. T. Leete, W. McPherson, R. J. Trethewey, and three Borough representatives. Poppy Day. The Women’s Institute, Carterton, will have charge of the sale of poppies in Carterton this year and will commence their canvas for sales on Friday next. • * • Renovation of Cenotaph. The Cenotaph in the Memorial Square, Carterton, is at the present time being renovated by Messrs Hoar and Son, Masterton. With the passage of the years the names on the memorial have become dirty looking and in some places are scarcely discernible. The work will be completed before Anzac Day and will brighten the appearance of the cenotaph.
