BADMINTON
ST MATTHEW’S CLUB. SEASON SUCCESSFULLY OPENED. A large and enthusiastic gathering of players were present in the Parish Hall last evening when the St Matthew’s Badminton Club opened the season with an enjoyable Yankee tournament. The Rev E. J. Rich (president), in a happy speech, referred to the fine fellowship enjoyed by all members in the past. Mrs Rich then hit the first shuttle over the net. The tournament finalists were Mr R. Doggett and Miss Joyce Armstrong and Mr N. Ninnes and Mrs Welch, who fought out a thrilling finish, the latter pair winning 25/20. After supper had been served a meeting was held to elect a committee and to consider matters deferred at the annual meeting. A strong committee was appointed, and the club decided to enter a team for the inter-club B grade competition. Playing nights were arranged for Monday and Friday. Members and intending members, not present at the opening night, are requested to communicate with the searetary, ’phone 1573, immediately. The executive for the season is as follows: —President, Rev E. J. Rich; vice-presidents, Rev T. V. Pearson and Mr V. Joblin; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. J. Carle; club captain, Mr N. Ninnes; committee, Messrs V. Greer, R. Doggett, K. McEwen, Mrs Welch, Misses Richards and N. Yates; delegates to Wairarapa Badminton Association, Messrs Carle and Ninnes. Any members of the executive will supply information required by new members.
