MAURICEVILLE COUNTY
MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. MAORI RATES OUTSTANDING. I ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday. Councillor E. W. Cheetham presiding. There were also present Councillors R. Judd, D. Bennett, A. Forsberg, A. Gray and C. Welch. The finance report was submitted, showing a credit balance of £277 6s 6d. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £lOl6 8s 9d, including the bridge loan and the balance of the lorry purchase. The contractors for McKenzie’s bridge wrote requesting the council to do certain additional concreting on the southern abutment of this bridge required by the engineer. The overseer was instructed to attend to the matter. Mr W. J. McGruddy interviewed the council regarding proposals to repair or rebuild the bridge adjacent to his property at Mangamahoe. The matter was discussed and it was arranged that Mr McGruddy should submit a definite .proposal in. writing for the further consideration of the council at its next meeting. The clerk was directed to ask the Eketahuna County Council for permission to take metal from their metal pit or reserve at Kaiparoro. The clerk submitted a statement of the comparative expenditure for 193839, showing a satisfactory working expenditure. Various rates on land occupied by Maoris were accumulating and remaining unpaid at the rate of about £7O per year, for several years past; otherwise only approximately £65 of the rates for 1938-39 remain outstanding and would be collected. The overseer reported satisfactory work during the past month. Prospective work was considered and arranged for.
