GREYTOWN

FAREWELL GATHERING. MR AND MRS E. GRAHAM. (“Times-Age” Special.) Members of the Grey town Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union and League of Mothers met yesterday afternoon in the Parish Hall to bid farewell to a very highly esteemed member (Mrs E. Graham). Mrs Graham is leaving Greytown to reside in Levin. The afternoon was spent very pleasantly with songs, competitions and speeches. The proceeding were opened with the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem. Mrs McMinn contributed two songs, as also did Mrs T. R. Ingley, while Miss Isobel Wiggins gave two recitations. A competition comprising the name of Graham, took the form of a telegram made up from the separate initials. The winners were Mesdames Bull, 1; and Ben, 2. Mrs Bull on behalf of League members, spoke very feeling of Mrs Graham’s capabilities as conductor of the Glee Choir and the help she has rendered the League of Mothers. Mrs Ben, president of the W.D.F.U. spoke on behalf of W.D.F.U. members, and expressed her appreciation at the capable way Mrs Graham had always carried out her duties at treasurer to the Division, assisting in every way possible. Mrs Bull then presented Mrs Graham with a beautiful posy of berries, and autumn leaves made by Mrs Bayless, and an envelope filled with notes.

Members then stood and sang for “She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Mrs Graham feelingly replied, thanking, everyone for their kindness in coming to say farewell to her in such large numbers. She said she would always remember Greytown and the good times She had had here. Afternoon tea was then handed round. The gathering concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem.

A pleasant function took place in St Luke’s Anglican Parish hall last evening, when members of the church and Guild gathered to bid farewell, to two of their members in the persons of Mr and Mrs E. Graham, who are leaving to reside in Levin. The evening was spent in dancing, etc., and Mrs T. R. Ingley contributed two solos. Mrs Whimp read out a very amusing competition the winners being Mrs E. Graham and Miss Stephens. The Rev and Mrs Isaacson (Khandallah) were present. Mr Isaacson spoke very warmly on the personal qualities of Mr and Mrs Graham, and wished them success in their new venture. Mrs York, President of the Guild referred to the good work Mrs Graham had done as secretary of the Guild. Mr E. Day, as a member of the Vestry, expressed good wishes for their future. The Rev Canon Sykes spoke on similar lines, and expressed the hope that Mr and Mrs Graham would enjoy the same good fellowship in the Levin Church, as they had had in Grey town. Supper was handed round, and the function concluded with singing Auld Lang Syne, and the National Anthem. Mrs H. Carter was accompaniste for the evening, assisted by Master Alan Carter. RIFLE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY H. W. FEAST. The Greytown Defence Rifle Club held it club championship shoot over the weekend. The weather conditions were ideal and the shooting at the short ranges was of a very high standard. H. W. Feast and D. J. Flynn both recorded possibles at 300 and 500 yards. At 600 yards the club’s veteran J. B. Bairston also put on a possible. In the afternoon the wind shifted to a rear fish-tail. H. W. Feast maintained his position till the end of the day, and won the championship with the fine score of 195. D. J. Flynn was second with 193, and H. R. Feast third, 190. In the handicap, D. J. Flynn was 1, H. W. Feast, 2; G. Te Whaiti, 3.
