ROAD CYCLING

WAIRARAPA CLUB’S RACE. WON BY M. GRAHAM. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Wairarapa Amateur Cycling Club opened its 1939 road season with an eleven mile race at Greytown last Saturday. A handsome silver cup was donated by Mrs A. J. Allison to be presented to the first rider home. Mr J. Robertson, M.P., a vice-presi-dent of the club, declared the season open by sending, away the limit man, K. Gilbert. He was followed 30sec later by O. Morris and E. Lefort; B. Dooling, M. Graham and G. Goodin 45sec‘later; L. Green and C. Gourlay lmin 15sec later; and J. Brader and J. McAliece 2min 15sec later, while the scratch men R. Copp and K. Woollett followed 3 minutes later. G. Goodin, a first year rider, set a fast! pace, catching the limit men very early. This rider, together with M. Graham, left the limit men and their co-marker, Dooling, to go on and secure first and second places, M. Graham narrowly defeating G. Goodin for honours. L. Green, B. Dooling and C. Gourlay crossed the line in that order, a short time later. The two scratch men, made very little impression on the field, catching J. Brader and J. McAliece about two miles from home. In the sprint for fastest time honours K. Woollett narrowlySdefeated R. Copp. The race was held over a return course from the Greytown Hotel to the Tauherenikau Hotel. The weather conditions were moderately good with a slight northerly breeze.
