LAMBING PROSPECTS

OUTLOOK NOT OVER-BRIGHT. EFFECT OF DRY SPELL. Nothing which has occurred during the past few weeks has made the prospects for the coming lambing season more cheerful than they were a month ago. In fact, with the continued dry weather, the outlook has become distinctly worse and there are many farmers in the district who, in the light of previous experience with unusually dry autumns, are forecasting poor percentages. It is a generally accepted fact that the best lambing percentages are obtained when the ewes are provided with a flush of green feed just prior to the rams being put out. Apart from those who have had green crops for the purpose, the vast majority of farmers have been quite unable to comply with this requirement during the present season. In addition the rams are apt to go back quickly in condition during the dry weather and this development has taken place in many instances.
