CYCLE LIGHTS
SPECIAL ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN EFFORT TO MINIMISE ROAD RISKS. COPING WITH WINTER DANGERS. (Ev Telcgranh—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A special enforcement campaign against cyclists riding at night without lights or proper rear reflectors will be commenced on Monday week, according to a Ministerial announcement. A circular has been sent to all enforcement authorities, and it- is hoped to make the drive the most, efficient ever organised in the Dominion. It is instituted purely in the interests of the cyclists themselves, and is based upon experience during the late autumn of last year. II is pointed out that in summer the densest traffic is in daylight hours, but with the shortening of the days the after-daylight risk increases, and during the early winter frosts and rain decrease stopping distances and reduce visibility, allowance for which is not made by any road user. The cycle represents the slowest type of vehicle, and consequently is being constantly overtaken. Hence stress is laid upon the need for an effective rear light or mirror.
