It is officially stated that the naval manoeuvres announced yesterday will be in the Atlantic, off the coast of Spain, although some vessels might visit Mediterranean ports. Forty warships will participate. The cruise is officially described as an extraordinary foreign training cruise and it is stated that an old tradition of the German navy, broken off during the Spanish war, has been resumed.
Observers emphasise that the proximity of German warships to the Mediterranean in the event of a new crisis. It is stated that the squadron is only a fifth of the' German naval strength, leaving plenty of ships in home waters.
