PERSONAL

Mr A. T. Donnelly has been re-elec-ted chairman of the board of directors of the Bank of New Zealand for the ensuing 12 months. The Hon . G. R. Mason, AttorneyGeneral left Wellington for New Plymouth this morning to inaugurate the railcar service between these two centres on behalf of the Minister of Railways, the Hon D. G. Sullivan. Mr Tennent could claim to be one of the founders of Rugby football in New Zealand. He was instrumental in forming an Association football club in Nelson in 1868, and at the first meeting was elected secretary and treasurer, but this code was soon replaced by Rugby. Mr Edward James Cockerill, of Upper Plain, Masterton, will celebrate his 92nd birthday tomorrow. Mr Cockerill enjoys remarkably good health and spends much of his time in growing flowers and vegetables. He is able to undertake quite strenuous work in the garden, in spite of his years.

The funeral of the late Mrs C. McLean took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon, there being a representative attendance of mourners. Wreaths were sent by the manager and staff of Messrs C. Smith Ltd and the Post and Telegraph staff, besides others from private individuals. Mr R. H. Brewerton conducted the burial service. The pall-bearers were Messrs A. C., and D. McLean (sons) and T„ B. and C. Munn (brothers of the late Mrs McLean). The death of Mr Robert Collings Tennent at the age of 90 years in Woodville yesterday removes one of the oldest if not the oldest of personalities associated with banking in New Zealand. Joining the service of the Bank of New South Wales in Nelson in 1868. Mr Tennent on his retirement in 1918 had completed 50 years’ service as an officer of the bank, for 40 years of which he had acted as manager at various branches, including Auckland Wellington. Blenheim, Nelson and Invercargill.
