CROSSBREDS FIRM
AT CHRISTCHURCH WOOL saLe SHARP DROP IN MERINOS. . SLOW SELLING IN EARLY STAGES (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. Wool values followed North Island trends at the fourth and final Christchurch auction this morning. Good halfbredo and Corriedales were, fully firm on the rates ruling at. Ihe March sale, but Merinos were quite a penny easier all round and other medium, and rough fine wools were down,by about the same amount. Crossbreds had an excellent sale, with firm values. . Bradford dominated the sale, with fair support from the Continent. The threat of a French embargo on wool buying in the. Dominion did not enter into the sale, buying from this section, being confined to fairly restrained bidding. Local mills were not particularly active and this, probably accounted for the casing in Merinos. The offering totalled 29,612 bales and was ,representative of the usual mixed selection at a fourth sale. A wide variety of wool was offered and a big proportion was rough in appearance. High country clips formed a big proportion of the Offering and a number of crossbred lines were entered from the West Coast and the Chathams. Wool held over from earlier sales improved the general quality. Passings were heavy on the first catalogue, where they amounted to nearly 16 per. Cent and represented mainly rough bellies, pieces arid other oddments. At this stage the sale was described by the auctioneer as “tooth dragging,” with buyei’S showing an almost complete indifference to many lots, while others failed to attract a bid. Selling improved as the sale progressed and on the first two catalogues passings averaged about 12 per cent. The best price of the morning was 141 d paid for a. binned lot. This class made 151,d at the April sale last year. Corriedale, of which only a limited selection was offered, realised to 12:Jd, thid being paid for sixteen bales, in a Ciilvei’den clip. .Corriedale tops made 12Jd, .Merino made to 12.jd, arid crossbred lid. ~ . , ~.. M Segard, president of the Wool Dealers’ Association of the Roubaix and Tourcoing districts, has issued a statement that the French woql buyers’ threat to boycott New Zealand was due to the decision to prohibit the import o'f luxury goods from France in order to protect the exchange value of the currency. “Our commercial balance with New Zealand has not been of the brightest,” said M Segard. “It became extremely adverse when New Zealand ceased purchases of scents, silks, cognacs, etc., as a result of which the New Zealand Government asked impoiteis to buy from, other sources.’’
