NAVY LEAGUE

LADIES’ AUXILIARY ANNUAL REPORT. / ACTIVITIES OF PAST YEAR. The twenty-first annual report of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Navy League, Masterton branch, to be presented at the annual meeting next Tuesday, states: — We have received' the resignation of Mrs O. A. Bunny as a vice-president with deep regret. Mrs Bunny has held office as president and vice-president', and also as a member of our committee since its inception. Mrs Bunny was always ready to forward the interests of the league in every way, and her valuable services will be a great loss to the executive. Our membership numbers are as follows: —Life members 15; 10s 6d members' 15; 5s members 175; 2s 6d members 3; total 208. Our school membership for 1938 numbered 325, including the following schools: St Patrick's School 103; Solway College 79; St Matthew’s School 62;- H'adlow Prep School 38; Fernridge School 18; Mata--hiwi School 7; Mauriceville West 6; Newman 4; Wairarapa College 1; Miscellaneous 7. “We thank the teachers of all schools for the spirit of loyalty they haveshown in enrolling members. The school membership for 1938 has been most encouraging. Nearly all the schools increased their numbers, and' St Patrick’s School was added' to' our register with 103 members. We congratulate St Patrick's School on gaining their flag, and regret it was not possible to arrange the presentation ceremony before the end of the year. We also congratulate Matahiwi School, Hadlow Preparatory School, and St Matthew's Collegiate School on maintaining their 100 per cent membership, the former two for ten consecutive years, and St Matthew’s School for the third consecutive year. Mr Darroch visited Masterton on July 11, 12 and 13 and addressed the pupils of eight schools, and presented Long Service Badges. Owing to the Wellington Education Board’s decision to allow Navy League lecturers after school hours only, it was not possible to visit more than two primary schools. As our work' in the schools is so much restricted by these regulations, we again appeal to all members to do their utmost to make known to the public the aims of the Navy League, and thus assist in the work of propaganda. During Mr Darroch’s visit a most successful meeting was held in the Midland Hotel on July 12 at 3 p.m.. to which all members and friends, and representatives of other organisations were invited. Mr Ddrroch gave a most interesting address;

and a number of new members were enrolled. “A conference was held in Wellington on February 16 at which Mr Darroch kindly acted as delegate for the Masterton branch. In December a letter was received inviting Masterton to send delegates to a special conference of the Navy League to be held on February 3, 1939, to meet Earl Beatty, chairman of the Navy League Executive in London. Four delegates were appointed to attend this conference. "Two large parcels of books and periodicals were forwarded to the Mission to Seamen in Wellington, and grateful letters of thanks were received from the mission'er. Again we wish to thank Mr A. D. Low for auditing the books; Mr J. V. Gordon for receiving subscriptions; Mr R. H. Williams for much help, and the Press for their unfailing courtesy and assistance. We hope that all members will show their interest in the Navy League by attending the annual meeting, to be held in the A. and P. Rooms on Tuesday, April 18, 1939, at 2.30 p.m. Subscriptions are now due, and may be sent to Miss A. Sellar, 17 King Edward Street, Lansdowne, or if more convenient may be left with Mr. J. V. Gordon, Queen Street, Mastert'on.” The report is signed Mrs A. Caselberg, president.
