EELS PERISH
EFFECT OF DRY WEATHER. DAMS IN TYNESIDE DISTRICT DRY UP. The dry weather is apparently causing the death of many eels in the Tyneside district. Dams there have dried up, and in consequence eels have been left stranded, though some have attempted to reach water by travelling overland. Although a journey of this sort may be successfully accomplished in wet weather or where the ground is wet, it is doubtful if eels could travel far over dry land. An interesting occurrence, however, was the finding yesterday of a fairsized eel in a spring in high country. The spring was dug out so as to afford a better supply of water for stock and it was found to contain an eel. Where trout are concerned, although some of the higher reaches of the streams are drying up, so far no serious -losses of trout have occurred, though if no rain falls within a week or so there is a possibility of a serious depletion of fish in local streams.
