SEX CONTROL
EXPERIMENTS IN AMERICA, HEIFER OR BULL CALVES. Experimental work on sex control by the Applied Research Laboratories of Dayton, New Jersey, sponsored by The Nows, New York City daily paper, and participated in experimentally by the Shelby County Penal Farm at Memphis, Tennessee, is attracting earnest study by livestock breeders who know of it. The laboratories have for about a year been experimenting with rats and rabbits. Using the same technique, Mr Gale Carr and the veterinarian in medical charge of the Penal Farm's Jersey herd, have extended the work there. The results of this" experimental work by both the Laboratories and the Penal Farm may have far-reaching influence in livestock breeding. If it proves successful, the pedigree cattle breeder’s problem of more bull calves than he needs may be solved. Successful coupling of this sex control idea with artificial insemination should have tremendous influence. European workers in this new field cf research have reported a considerable amount of success and the advancement they have made has encouraged research officers in America to take up the work. A great advancement would certainly be made if livestock breeders could have their choice of bull or heifer calves, but even if the problem were solved it would bo very many years before the idea could be put to any practical use.
